HP OfficeJet 5258 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I need ink, but according to HP my ink levels are good. The last time I received ink cartridges was in January 2020. Despite what HP says, magenta no longer prints and in order to get any ink out of the others every time I want to print something I have to shake the cartridges, clean the cartridges 6 or 8 times, align the cartridges a time or two, clean page smears and then if I'm lucky I might finally be able to print a legible document. And now, as I'm online trying to request more ink, HP can't connect to the printer because it is "offline" or not connected to wifi.  Funny that on the same dashboard there is a note that they were able to connect just fine this morning at 3:59 am, presumably when they were checking my usage. Regardless, I went through the wifi set up wizard. Surprise, surprise ... HP still can't connect to the printer.  This is feeling more and more like a scam. From what I've paid HP in the past 4 (almost 5) years I could have probably bought ink twice and saved all this hassle. Are there any ink cartridges for this printer that I can buy and use without having to subscribe or should I just trash this printer and buy one from a company that allows users to use the product they paid for without having to subscribe to anything else?

Hi @delia500,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you're facing with your printer and ink—it sounds incredibly frustrating. Let’s narrow down the problem with these questions:

  1. Are you currently enrolled in an HP Instant Ink subscription, or are you trying to use regular (non-Instant Ink) cartridges?
  2. When you try to print, does the printer display any error messages, such as a "cartridge not compatible" or "empty ink" notification?
  3. Have you recently replaced the cartridges with genuine HP cartridges, or are you still using the ones received in 2020?

These will help clarify if the issue is related to the subscription or cartridge compatibility.

If you are still enrolled, I would need a few details

Since the instant ink account details are confidential, please send me the required information via private message.
