I have been using the 680 ink (both tri-color and black) on my HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 3630 All-in-One Printer series for years because that's what is says on the printer. So when the black ink ran out, I replaced it with another genuine 680 black ink cartridge then it started showing "incompatible cartridges". I reinstalled the old one and it still gives the same error now.
I already did all the trouble shooting and none of those worked. I checked the support page for compatible ink cartridges and it doesn't show now the 680. What is happening??

Hi @xbuffyx
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP DeskJet 3630 says that the ink cartridge is incompatible, even though it's new, it could be due to a few common issues:
- Incorrect Cartridge: Ensure that the ink cartridge is the correct type for your printer model. Verify the cartridge number matches the one specified for your HP DeskJet 3630.
- Installation Issues: Double-check that the cartridge is installed properly. Remove it and reinsert it, making sure it clicks into place securely.
- Protective Tape: New cartridges often come with a protective tape or plastic covering on the contacts. Make sure you have removed all the protective tape from the cartridge before installing it.
- Cartridge Contacts: Sometimes the contacts on the cartridge or inside the printer can be dirty. Gently clean the contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth.
- Firmware Updates: Check if there’s a firmware update available for your printer. Sometimes updates can resolve compatibility issues with cartridges. Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Printer Reset: Perform a hard reset of the printer. Turn it off, unplug it for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Cartridge Expiration: Verify the expiration date on the cartridge. Although rare, it’s possible to receive a cartridge that’s expired or defective.
Refer to this document: HP DeskJet 3630 All-in-One Printer series User manual
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I have done all those steps. And like I said, I have been using the 680 ink cartridges ever since, and it is the one showing on the sticker in the printer but that cartridge is not showing on the compatible list anymore.
