We signed up for a free trial of Instant Ink when we purchased the printer however we are going over the allowance of pages quite significantly each billing period. I think it might be better if we cancelled the programme - but I still have ink cartridges? Are these just lost or can they still be used? It doesn't seem very cost effective or environmentally friendly to just destroy them?

You can change to a different plan (more pages or less pages per month) at any time.
If you cancel the plan the Instant Ink cartridges will no longer work and must be returned to HP for recycling. When you sign up for the Instant Ink program you are NOT purchasing ink, you are purchasing a subscription to a set number of pages per month. The ink is supplied, but remains the property of HP and must be returned if you cancel the program in accordance with the terms of service. See sections 5.d and 9.c of the terms of service here.
