HP Office Jet Pro6978

When I put in my black cartridge, the printer said it had been used.  I tried to print with it and it was light gray.  So I traded it out for the black cartridge that I had just removed, and had the same message and results. Office Jet Pro 6978

@Bert1931, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • Are you using new HP ink cartridges?
  • Where did you buy them from?
  • Was the ink cartridge in its packaging when bought?
  • You may also check the warranty details on the pack/ink cartridge.

To resolve print quality issues, clean the printhead 2 times and print a quality report as mentioned in this document - Black or Color Ink Not Printing, Other Print Quality Issues
