I already have Instant Ink for my current printer but is about to buy a new HP printer that comes with 6 months free Instant ink. How do I set that up so I can use the free 6 months?

You can always add multiple printers to your Instant Ink account. When you buy a new printer, log in to your Instant Ink account and add a new printer to avail the offer.
