I turned my printer on this morning and the paper tray was empty. I filled the tray (letter) but it began to grind and said that the photo tray was empty. I did not set it to print photos. Sigh

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the tray issue.
To better assist you - Are you trying to print from the HP Smart app or through AirPrint?
Select tray from the printer's control panel -
From the printer's control panel, touch Setup Menu > Preferences > Tray or Paper Management
Once the desired paper tray is selected, Airprint will automatically detect the tray.
If the issue still persists, try updating your iOS device - Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
