Hi @greenleaves,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I understand that you are having issues with the cartridge.
To help diagnose and resolve the issue with your HP ENVY 5544 printer displaying the message "Cartridge drying out, please wait," I would need a few details to help you further.
- Are you using original HP ink cartridges, refilled, or third-party cartridges? If third-party, have you used them before without issues?
- Did you recently install new cartridges, or have the current ones been in use for some time? Was there any error or difficulty during installation?
- Have you noticed any changes in print quality, such as streaks, faded prints, or missing colors?
- How frequently do you use the printer? Is it used daily, or does it sit idle for long periods?
- Is the printer located in a dry or dusty environment, near heat sources, or exposed to direct sunlight?
- Does the "Cartridge drying out" message appear every time you print, or does it occur intermittently?
Meanwhile, you answer that I want you to try a few troubleshooting steps below.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer. Check if the error persists.
Check Cartridge Compatibility:
- Ensure you are using the correct cartridges for the HP ENVY 5544 (HP 62 series cartridges). Check that the cartridges are properly installed and securely clicked into place.
Clean the Cartridges and Printhead:
- Open the printer's access door and remove the cartridges.
- Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
- Repeat this process for the printhead contacts inside the printer. Allow everything to dry for a few minutes before reinstalling the cartridges.
Perform Printer Maintenance:
- Use the printer’s control panel or the HP Smart app to run a printhead cleaning cycle.
- Access the maintenance menu and choose "Clean Printhead" or a similar option.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post

Hi @greenleaves
Please find the remaining steps below.
Check for Firmware Updates:
- Visit the HP Support website and check for any available firmware updates for your printer model. Updating the firmware can resolve software-related issues.
Run Diagnostic Tests:
- From the printer’s control panel, access the Tools or Setup menu and run any available diagnostic tests or print quality reports to identify underlying issues.
Replace Cartridges:
- If the error persists, try replacing the cartridges with new, original HP cartridges to rule out cartridge-related problems.
Check Printer Environment:
- Ensure the printer is in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, or excessive dust. If the environment is too dry, consider using a humidifier near the printer.
These steps should help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve the cartridge drying out message on your HP ENVY 5544
If none of the above steps resolve the issue, contact HP Support for further assistance or to check if the printer needs servicing.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
