I had a printer under the instant ink program that died.  I purchased a used printer that specifically uses the same ink cartridges as the old one in order to use the new replacement ink cartridges I had already and not waste them.   The replacement printer came with its original ink cartridges and has now run out of black ink.

I have brand new cartridges that I cannot use as the printer is stating they are registered to a different printer.  Is there any way to transfer these cartridges to my replacement printer and allow them to be used and not wasted?  Otherwise, what do I do with these brand new cartridges that ARE COMPATIBLE with my replacement printer?

please help.

@ItsJustMe123, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand you would like to use the Instant Ink replacement ink cartridges in the new printer.

This is not possible. You will have to enroll this printer in Instant Ink and you will be sent a welcome kit with ink cartridges.

The Instant Ink cartridges that you have will not work on any other printer. You can send them back to HP in the return envelope.

If the Instant Ink plan is still active, you may transfer it to the new printer.

  1. Make sure the new printer is HP Instant Ink compatible. If you plan to purchase one, look for the HP Instant Ink logo on the box. For warranty replacements, you will automatically be sent a compatible printer.
  2. Do not cancel your current Instant Ink plan.
  3. Once you have the new printer, log in to your account at hpinstantink.com and click Enroll/Replace Printer.
  4. Then follow the steps to complete enrollment of your new printer.

Note: Even after the account transfer, the Instant Ink cartridges that you have will not work on this printer.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
