What happens if I replace my printer cartridges before they're too low?

I print my own art prints using my printer on the Instant Ink service. It got to a point where my colour cartridge was 'low' but not enough to replace, but I was wasting tons of pages of my monthly allowance working out why my prints were not printing enough blue.
No re-alignment, cleaning, adjusting colour management, or manually checking the cartridge fixed the issue at all - it just stopped printing with enough blue.
Eventually a new cartridge arrived and I replaced it. Blue was fixed!

This time, I printed quite a few yellow-heavy prints and now this cartridge is low, but specifically low on yellow. I once again wasted even more pages trying to troubleshoot the issue. I think I have wasted around 30 of my pages trying to troubleshoot the issue, and I have only had 100 since the start of my subscription. This has been very frustrating- I feel like the only solution is to replace the whole cartridge whenever a colour runs dry.
However, I also received an email from the Instant Ink Service pointing out that I shouldn't replace my ink cartridges until I am told to do so, and I think it implied that there would be a cost if I did.
I don't know what to do as I saved up for this printer specifically to do this job. The bigger solution would be to get a printer that uses separate colour cartridges but I couldn't afford any of those, so what next? Will I really be charged for changing my cartridges early? Is there something else I can do to make my printer as efficient as possible?

The Instant Ink server monitors the ink levels and ships a replacement ink cartridge when it is low. So, you wont be charged if you replace the ink cartridges.

You will only be charged for the number of pages you print and not he cartridges you use.
