I've noticed that my installed cartridges are printing just fine and have a lot of ink left in them when replacements arrive. Despite this, I get a lot of nag messages insisting I change out these perfectly good cartridges for the new ones.
This seems to be a hustle to get me to buy more cartridges than I need, and is wasteful of materials and my time.
The refill service is a nice convenience, but I really don't like being played.
Why should I pull out and return cartridges that are not empty?

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
HP Instant Ink cartridges remain the property of HP.
In the context of your subscription, this means HP accepts the returned cartridges for responsible recycling.
Reference / How-to / Information : HP Instant Ink Help - Manage your account > Recycle your cartridges
If the printer is asking you to change out the cartridges and you have the cartridges to make the exchange, do that.
Return the used cartridges - regardless of the amount of ink you believe is in the cartridge(s).
Cartridge replacement message might be the result of the printer maintenance triggering the need to change the ink - the ink might have reached a lower threshold required to maintain quality printing.
