Yes, you can use retail cartridges, with a few caveats:

  • The printer will not report ink levels for retail cartridges to the Instant Ink servers.  If your replacement cartridges have already shipped this will not be an issue, but if not you should make sure to contact Instant Ink support and request replacement cartridges before installing retail cartridges in the printer.  I have put information on contacting HP for Instant Ink cartridges at the end of this message.
  • If there are *any* Instant Ink cartridges in the printer then any pages printed will count against your monthly usage.  If you replace all the cartridges with retail cartridges then the pages will not count toward your monthly allotment.
  • If you have cartridges that have been opened do not put tape back on the cartridges for storage as this will ruin the cartridge.  If you need to store opened cartridges see the document here.

The document here has information on contacting HP to get replacement Instant Ink cartridges.  Go to the HP Instant Ink site, the phone number (or chat option for some countries) will be listed in the lower center of the opening screen.
