use set up cartridges that came with printer

 

I do not want instant ink!  How do I set up a new printer without ordering instant ink?

@billk42, Welcome to HP Support Community!

 

I see that you're trying to set up the printer and it gives you an error message to use the setup ink cartridges. Set up ink cartridges are not Instant Ink cartridges, so no need to order instant ink cartridges for the setup.

 

Hard reset the printer, remove and reinstall the ink cartridges and see if that helps. Here is how you do it-

 

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. Remove the ink cartridges from the printer.
  4. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  5. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  6. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  7. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  8. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  9. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  10. Install the ink cartridges and continue setup.

Additionally, Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
