Operating System: macOS 11.0 Big Sur

HP Office Jet Pro 8710.  Went to replace black cartridge with the latest one sent to me by instant ink.  Gives me the "older generation" error message.  Even if I put the old cartridge back in I get this message.  Everything is clean.  I tried unplugging the printer, didn't;t make any difference.  Do I need to do some sort of firmware downgrade to get around this problem that has been introduced by the anti-counterfeiting firmware ?
