RGS
Linux

Hi @kellyrgs,

As part of the testing I am doing, per our call last week, I have installed the latest version of RGS (20.20) on a test Flame workstation (CentOS 8.2) and RGS client (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS).  I immediately noticed terrible performance with AVC.  I normally get around 50fps and now I am lucky to get 24 fps and large latency.  During video playback, this leads to many stutters, and during UI interaction there is lots of lag.  There also seems to be pulsing at GOP frames. Please see this YouTube video to demonstrate the issue. About every 4 seconds there is a blurry GOP pulse, https://youtu.be/UAj7QKuW1E4.

In other streaming products I've been involved with, this issue was solved by switching to Intra-Refresh instead of fixed GOP length.  If you guys are using ffmpeg/lavc backend, intra-refresh with nvenc does not work, (unsure if it was fixed in ffmpeg 4.4). Although all the Nvidia documents do indicate that intra-refresh is support at their API/SDK level.

I noticed in the changelog this line "We are improving the backend of our video pipeline."  I have a feeling whatever backend work has been done, broke something un-intended.

Downgrading back to 20.12 resolves all issues. At this point I consider 20.20 to be UN-usable and should be pulled from distribution.  I have not tested any other OS combinations other than CentOS 8.2 sender and Ubuntu 20.04LTS receiver.  Please feel free to contact me off list if your team wants to discuss this anymore.

Regarding the GOP pulse, see this exact issue from another streaming product.  It is all relevant info, and I even posted the same exact test frame as in my video here.

Thank you for your update, we will look into 20.2 versus 20.1.2.  I did see your email as well.

I already emailed you, but the issue looks to be Linux receiver side.  Please use 20.1.2 for receiver and 20.2 for sender.  Let me know if this does not resolve the problem while the issue is being looked into.

Thanks!
