Officejet 5610
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Pinting  and copying is glacier-like slow...minutes per line. Have verified settings (Normal, etc), unplugged/plugged back in, completely uninstalled / reinstalled the dirvers from HP Support site, checked the cartridges (which are brand new, orig HP)/verified ink flow...both color and black. Connection is direct via USB, using the printer's usb cable.

 

At a loss here...any direction/recommendations to resolve appreciated.

There are two possibilities: watch the printer as it is printing a page.  Does the printer 1) take a swath and then delay for fifteen seconds or so, then make the next swath or 2) take many (hundreds) of swaths across the page without delay at the end of the swath?  These would have two different root causes:

 

  1. The long delay after each swath would be caused by a faulty cartridge.  The thermal sensor on one of the cartridges may have failed, causing the printer to think the cartridge is overheating.  The normal troubleshooting steps would involve removing first the black cartridge, sending a test page and check for speed.  If this is normal then the color cartridge is OK.  If it is still slow then repeat the process with the color cartridge removed.  If this now prints properly the black cartridge is at fault.  Unfortunately, I do not know that the Officejet 5610 allows printing with one cartridge removed.  If the printer will not print with a cartridge removed try removing the cartridges and cleaning the contacts manually as described in pages 85-86 of the user guide here.
  2. If the carriage sweeps many times with very small paper feed between them and no delays at the end of a sweep the issue is likely that the driver settings have a a photo paper selected.  If you are printing on plain paper make sure this is selected in the driver.

I would suspect the cause is 1) above.  Replacing the offending cartridge would resolve the issue in this case.

 

Edit - I see the cartridges are new.  If you still have the old cartrdiges put them in one at a time and see if you can determine which new cartridge is causing the slow printing.  If one of the new cartridges can be verified as the cuplrit you can get a warranty replacement.

 

The cartridges do have a warranty, see the document here for information. To get warranty coverage you will need to go to the Contact HP page, then enter the information for your printerAt this point it will likely say "Manufacturer's warranty has expired".  To the right of this it will say "See details".  Click the "See details" link, which will open another page with more details.  Near the bottom of the text will be a paragraph that says : 

 

HP has checked your product information, including the product and serial numbers, to determine your warranty results.The legal warranty expiration date is based on the date of purchase, as indicated on your receipt. If you feel these results are incorrect, you may submit a dispute for review. Dispute this >  

 

Click on the "Dispute this" link which will ask for some additional contact information.  Fill out the contact information, then in the bottom section select:  

 

Dispute reason  

  Issue with my Accessories, Supplies and/or Software. 

 

In the comment section indicate that you have a defective supply that is in warranty, you have verified the supply is defective by switching it with a replacement supply.

Thanis Bob...for both the quick response as well as the right solution. BTW, the 5610 wouldn't let me print with just one cartridge, but wiping the contacts down with a damp coffee filter did the trick even though there wan't anything visible on them!
