I'm noticing 1 1/4 inch horizontal bands (viewing in portrait mode) when printing on my HP8720. For example if I print a large grey block on a page (A4 plain paper for example) I'll see bands every 1 1/4 inches. The printer is only a few months old. Anyone else noticing this? Anyone fixed it? Same issue if I print from a Mac or Windows 10 PC.

Hi @RobGen,

I read the post. Thanks for the quick response. I was away for my weekend (not a Saturday and Sunday) and could not respond to your response immediately.  You've displayed profound technical expertise, immaculate patience coupled with a never say die spirit to try and get the issue resolved. Kudos to you for a job well done. 🙂

You've been great to work with and it has been an absolute honor to share this platform with you. Based on your first post, I gave you the steps that might have fixed the issue if it was not hardware related. As the copy function does not work, we deduced as a team that the printer has a hardware issue and needs to be replaced.

It is time to contact HP phone support for a replacement or visit the HP store via this link: http://hp.care/2rQLe1b to order a printer based on your requirements and needs.Trust me I've done all I can to assist you by keeping your best interest in mind.

I hope the replacement product  works great and stays healthy for a long time.

if this helps, to simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. Also, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed year ahead and stay healthy. 🙂

Hi @RobGen,

Good Day. Thank you for taking an interest in the HP community. I understand that you require assistance with print quality. I will be really glad to assist you here. 🙂

Fabulous description and superb diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. )

For me to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did you try to make copies directly from the printer and check if it copies in color?
  • Did you try printing a test page and check?
  • Did you try with a different set of cartridges?

For now please try these steps:

  • Please make 2 copies directly from the printer without any communication from the computer.

If it copies correctly, then try these steps:

  • Reset the Mac printing system from this link: http://hp.care/2gOrf2g then add the printer by following these steps:

1.) Click the Apple menu icon, and then click System Preferences.

2.) Click Printers and Scanners, Print and Scan, or Print and Fax.

3.) In the Printers list, click your HP printer, and then click the Minus button to delete it.

4.) Click the Add button.

5.) Find, and then select the name of your printer from the Printer list, and then click Add to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.

6.) Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select the name of your printer.

7.) Avoid the AirPrint driver. Once the correct HP driver is chosen, select Add to add the printer to the list.

8.) Try to print.

This should do the trick for you.

  • If it fails to copy then follow all the relevant steps from this link: http://hp.care/2g6QNIp for fixing such issues with the printer.

If the problem continues, contact HP phone support to get the cartridges replaced or printer replaced as one of them may be faulty. That will do the trick for you.

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://hp.care/2r9wSvP

  • Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
  • Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
  • Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
  • Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of it for you.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care now and have a superb week ahead. 🙂

Hi David

Thanks for your reply. A couple of things .... I did make direct copies off the printer but I'm still seeing the bands. Previous to that I even printed using a Windows 10 laptop and got the same result (just like I did with the iMac). The bottom line is that I still get bands every 1 1/4 inches. The diagnostic test patterns look fine and it's only when I print a large color or multicolor block that I notice the banding. It could well be the printer as I don't see the cartridges being the issue. The next step will be contacting your technical support and perhaps trying out a new printer.

As an FYI to anyone having this issue and to close off this Post ....

It appears that by setting Paper Type = Plain Paper and Quality = Best fixes my issue.  No more banding.
If you set Quality = Draft or Quality = Normal then you see the banding.
