When I went to replace the ink cartridges, due to a low ink notice, I found "spilled" black ink inside of the printer. What might have caused this and can it be fixed?

@6985, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Did you check if any of the ink cartridges were leaking?
The printer cleans the printhead/ink cartridge when required and some amount of ink may have accumulated in the service station part of the printer.
You may try cleaning the ink. If any of the ink cartridges are leaking, or you find ink spilled again inside the printer after you have cleaned it, it is a possible hardware issue.
Let me know how this goes.

I saw no evidence of leaking from the cartages. I will attempt to clean up the "spilled" ink. However, the "spilled" ink is like a thick slug and it will take some doing to clean it up, even if I can. I'm going to give it a try, but I'm preparing myself that I will need a new printer. The printer in question is about ten years old so it has had a good run if I do need to replace it.
