I know my printer is a little dated, but I bought brand new black ink for it and installed it correctly, but I’m still receiving the flashing orange error basically telling me that I am out of ink. I’m not sure what to do next.

Welcome to the HP Support Community. 

 

As I understand from your post, there's an issue with the ink cartridges. Don't worry, I'd be happy to help. 

 

To better assist you - 

 

1) Are you using a genuine HP ink? 

2) Are you experiencing this issue with the old black ink as well? 

 

While you respond to that, let's try a printer reset - 

 

1) Take out the cartridges.

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Wait for 30 seconds. 

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not to a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

 

Try cleaning the ink cartridges. Refer to solution# 4, 5 and 6 from this document.
