Hello.   Printer produced indistinct copy so I changed to new cartridge but will mnot print at all in black.   Tricolour OK.   Diagnostic test shows 'device status' error.    Panel on printer shows flashing empty black cartridge.   I have uninstalled and re-installed software but no change.   Printer is just two year's old.   Help would be appeciated, please.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • Try making a Black copy on the printer and check if that works.
  • If the copy works fine, this could be a software issue.

Cleaning the ink cartridge and Updating the printer firmware may resolve this issue, let us try these steps:

Step 1: Make sure the ink cartridges are compatible

Step 2: Make sure the ink cartridges are correctly installed and the protective plastic tape is removed

Perform steps 2 and 3 from this document.

Step 3: Update printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your computer.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, try with an alternate/new Black ink cartridge.

Let me know how this goes.

Hello. Thanks for your message.    I have tried all the suggested steps without success.   I have undertaken the cleansing of printer and cartridges several times.    I do not have another new cartridge but have tried with the one new and the previous cartridge that although low was not completely out of ink.   The indicarors show no black ink available.   I think that a new printer is required despite this one being only two myear's old.    Deskjet 3630 models do not seem to be now available .

That's unfortunate. It seems like this is a hardware issue with the Black printhead in the printer.
