How do I make my desk jet always available to my iPad on my home network. I don't have this problem with my desktop computer. In fact, I can alternate between the Internet and printer all the time from my desktop unit.

Let me gather some information for better clarity to assist you correctly:
- Did you try connecting with HP Smartapp?
- Did this occur after a recent software or OS update?
I will be providing a roadmap with some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. Let us try these steps:
- Please perform a hard reset on the printer from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-deskjet-ink-advantage-3630-all-in-one-printer-series/7172313... by following instructions from the section “Step 1: Reset the printer
- Then update the printer’s firmware by following instructions from this link: https://support.hp.com/bg-en/document/c02919168 using a USB cable.
- Later from this user guide: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04649694 restore network defaults on the printer to factory settings. Refer to page 73 on how to do it.
- Then ensure all the latest iOS updates are installed on your iPad.
- Now try to connect using your iPad and check if it gets fixed.
- If it continues, then from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-deskjet-ink-advantage-3630-all-in-one-printer-series/7172313...
- Perform instructions from the section “Step 1: Restart the computer, printer, and router”
- Here the computer refers to your iPad.
- Now check for issue resolution. This should do the trick.
- If the issue persists, try connecting using HP smart app by following instructions from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-deskjet-ink-advantage-3630-all-in-one-printer-series/7172313... (HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Android, Apple iOS)
- Check the section under iOS and it gives instructions on how to install, connect and use the app with relevant FAQs.
This should nail it for you.
