Does Office Jet Pro 8500 need new printheads or has the printer completely failed?

Operating System: macOS 10.15 Catalina
Hello. I have run the recommended items on this thread (hard reset, re-alignment level one and two, etc) but still receive the alignment failed notice. I also just put in new ink cartridges ($75) and still nothing is printing out. How do I know if the printer needs new printheads or has the printer simply failed? I don't know whether to put a few more $ into new printheads ($25?) or to stop putting money into it and get a new printer. Any suggestions? Thank you.
