I actually have this problem, but opposite.  My color print works fine but the black does not print at all.  I tried adding another driver, but my Printer Driver Wizard options did not include Envy 7640.  I tried Envy 5530 series and it didn't help.

 

I've been through the Print Doctor and did everything it said.  Any more ideas?

1. Does the printer make black&white copies? Place any black text on the flatbed and make a copy.

2. If you don't see drivers for 7640, go to HP download page, download the driver and install it. After that, it will appear in your list.

It will not copy in B&W either, but the color does copy.  I have Instant Ink and contacted them to get a credit for all the pages that I printed but didn't use any ink, and they took me through several steps and decided to send me another ink cartridge. 

 

I'll update here after I've tried new ink.

If the printer does not make copies in black, the problem could be in the device and not with drivers.

I got a new ink cartridge and the printer is working fine.  Guess the cartridge (original HP that came with the printer) had a defect.  It still had plenty of ink, it just wouldn't print for some reason.
