If I do a copy on my Envy 5540 the printer just continues to say "Copying" and nothing happens.  When I power the printer off / on and select Copy, the printer then copies the document.  Why do I have to power off / on the printer to do a copy?  How do I fix this issue?

I fixed the copy problem myself.  I went into setting on the printer and updated the sofware via my router to HP and donloaded the latest HP software.  Problem resolved.

Hey @RobZimm,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you are having some issues with copying from your Envy 5540 e-All-in-One Printer. I can help you with that.

To start, make sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not a surge protector. Once done, while the printer is powered on, remove the power cable from the back of the printer for one minute.

If after following the above you are still not able to copy without powering off the printer, the printer needs to be replaced. You can contact HP Support by clicking on this link and filling out the form at the bottom to discuss options based on your warranty.

Please let me know the results after following the above. If you are able to copy without powering off the printer or reach some resolution with support, please click on Accept Solution. If you appreciate my help, please click on the thumbs up icon. Both icons are below this post.

I plugged the printer into the wall outlet instead of the surge protector and I removed and reinserted the power cable at the back of the printer.  Neither one helped.  Copy only works if I power the printer down/up before I do a copy. I have no intention of returning the printer.  I will have to live with this inconvenience. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Contacting HP Support directly using the link provided in my first post would be the final step for troubleshooting.
