The photo tray will not work. When I insert photo paper, only the main tray shows up on the screen for selecting paper type, the photo tray option is greyed out and not selectable. Even when I select the tray in the print options on the computer, the printer will pop up message to insert 4x6 paper and when I do, it keeps saying insert paper until I have to cancel print. Have most current drivers and running on windows pc. I can still print from main tray but would prefer to have a printer that actually works as promised not one that makes me do extra steps because of flaws.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

I went through the post and I see that you've already performed most of the steps, Kudos to you on that. 🙂

However, Let me  suggest a few steps.

follow these steps to reset the printer.

Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Wait at least 60 seconds.

Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

   NOTE:

HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.

Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

once done, remove all the papers from the printer, install only the photo paper in the photo tray and try printing.

Let me know how that pans out

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask any other queries as  well,

Considering, this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help. 🙂

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

I recommend you delete the driver and root level and retry, follow the steps below:

In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

Once done, follow this link, do a quick search with the product number, select the right operating system, and install the full feature driver software. 🙂

Keep me posted,

If the information I’ve provided was helpful,

Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

Is there a real fix to this yet? I'm tempted to just return the printer to Best Buy before the year warranty is out.

It's a shame that printer technology has seemingly lagged far behind all other technology.
