Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have tried to insert a NEW HP ink cartridge into my printer and it is giving me an error message that it is an older generation cartridge.  I paid dearly for this cartridge and am completely annoyed that I cannot use it.  I need to get directions to fix this or directions on obtaining a free replacement cartridge from HP.

Thank you for the information.

Let's try to reset the Printer here as it helps in removing any stored static electricity from the Printer which might be causing these issues.

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  7. NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  8. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  9. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  10. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

If the issue persists, please perform the remaining steps from this document: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_1721989-1461843-16

Hi, I am also having this same problem. I have tried removing the power cable but still no luck. I went to the link you have supplied, but I am getting a 404 Error - Website not found. Is there any chance you could paste it into the forum here or email it to me please?

Thanks

I have an HP 5258 which takes ink cartridges #63 for black and color. I have purchased ink twice at retail stores and both times I'm getting an error on my screen that says they are an OLDER VERSION of the #63! If the cartridge has changed, why doesn't it have a different number to indicate that?!

@Frustrated3318 Depending on the region you are from, here's the list of cartridges compatible with your device:

If you are in the first category, and yet it doesn't work or you get the error message, here's what I suggest you do:

Start with a hard reset using the below steps:

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

    NOTE:

HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

  5. Turn the printer on.

If the error persists, continue to the next step.
