I have had issues with my laptops connecting to my printer. I think this started after upgrading to Catalina, but am not 100% sure. Initially the printer will work then it will stop connecting after a day or so - perhaps after my laptop sleeps. Basically I have to remove my printer and remove the library files, reboot, then I reinstall the drivers and then the printer will work for a bit. Then like clockwork, after a day or so, perhaps when the laptop sleeps again, the laptop can no longer reach the printer.

I have been working with my MacBook Pro 16, My wife's MacBook 13 and her new MacBook Air, so this is not device specific. That said they all are running Catalina presently. All have the same issue. Interestingly, I can AirPrint from my iPhone without issue. This to me means the printer is in fact reachable. None have issues with my Canon photo printer on the same network. The printer also shows good connection strength on my Orbi network.

Please help.

@Smallfield, Welcome to HP Support Community!

To be able to assist you better, I would like to know the following:

  • Are the printer and PC connected to the same network?
  • Is your router dual-band enabled i.e., both 2.4GHz and 5GHz?
  • What is the distance between the router and the printer?
  • Is there any antivirus software installed on your computer?
  • Could you perform a ping test using the Mac Network Utility and let me know the results?

Use the printer IP address to perform a ping test, the printer IP can be located by selecting the wireless icon on the printer display.

The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold option-click the WiFi icon and then use shift-command-5 to take the screenshot. Press the space bar when the icon turns into a camera. Share the ping test results and the screenshot with us.

Also, check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.

Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. The software comes built-in with Apple's macOS and iOS operating systems.

Keep me posted for further assistance.

I think I found my more direct issue. It doesn't see my printer when I'm connected to my work VPN. We swapped remote access software when I got my Catalina upgrade. If I close out my VPN it will work. Is there a way to still "see" my printer when the VPN is on? I do print for work sometimes and presently have to turn off my VPN to print which is disruptive.

For the above I am on the same network (MESH Orbi)

We are dual band 2.4k and 5k, my connection of my laptop doesn't seem to preclude printing

Router to printer is 6' (180cm)

No antivirus

This on is on my VPN:

Clearly it interrupts communication. Can/How do I fix?
