This has been going on since, I think I got the printer. ☹️ It drives me nuts. Now I'm having problems with the extender as well. But every time I do a search to try and figure out how to get it put back correctly (I think it came this way), I can find nothing. Both my husband and my son have looked at it several times, and we can't figure out how to pop the try to reinsert it properly.
These are the tabs on top in the back that you would think have something to do with removing the cover, but we can't figure it out. Next photo is what it's supposed to look like. #3 is what the left side actually looks like.
This is the tab that is out and resting on its lock. Damnedest thing. And, I think it came that way, and I just didn't fix it because I thought all I'd have to do is pop it out and back in again.
You can see the misalignment.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I reviewed your post and I understand that the output tray is not aligned correctly.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
I recommend you push the top of the output tray with a little bit of force and check whether it gets locked.
Please refer to the below user guide (Page 18) for more information.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

I don't understand.
The output tray on my printer doesn't move. It doesn't lift. It doesn't do anything. It is snapped in to place. And "forcing" it will break the tab. Sorry. I thought this was explained, as well as demonstrated in the photos. The printer guide you refer to is for a different printer.
