The printer stopped printing with black ink. I installed a new cartridge then realigned the cartridges. The only color on the alignment printout was blue. I discovered black ink under the resting place for the printer head. Why is this happening? The head can't be removed without breaking something.

@Hirchert,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,

Are you using genuine HP Ink cartridges or refilled ink cartridges.

Have you tried to clean the ink cartridges with a lint free cloth and then with automated tool.

Have you tried to print the print quality diagnostic page from the printer.

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Let's try to print the print quality diagnostic report from the printer.

  1. Load plain, white paper into the paper tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, press the Down Arrow  to select Settings, and then press OK.

  3. Press the Down Arrow to select Tools, and then press OK.

  4. Press the Down Arrow to select Print Quality Report, and then press OK.

Evaluate the report for any defects.

  • If there are defects found, try the steps mentioned in this document (This document also has the steps to clean the printhead).

Alternatively, you can try to check if the old ink cartridges work.

You may try to follow the steps suggested in this document to clean the ink cartridge contact - HP Printers - 'Incompatible Ink Cartridge' or 'Ink Cartridges Missing' Error Displays

You may also try to update the printer firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

I installed brand new HP ink cartridges. The black ink is leaking from the printer head and spraying the inside of the printer case. I will junk this printer.

HP Recommended

I replaced the cartridge because it would not print with the old black cartridge.
