Solved!

HP OfficeJet 5740 won't stay connected to my computer

HP OfficeJet 5740
macOS 10.14 Mojave

The connection between my computer and my printer keeps disconnecting and I can't print anything.  So, I turn off my printer and then turn it back on and the connection is fine for about 24 hours and I can print and scan, etc.  But, then it disconnects again and I have to turn off the printer and then turn it back on.  Every time I turn off the printer and then turn it back on, it connects fine and I can print but it keeps disconnecting.

Solved!

HP OfficeJet 5740 won't stay connected to my computer

@BelugaDave, Welcome to HP Support Community!

  • Make sure the printer and the MAC are connected to the same wireless network.
  • This printer supports only 2.4GHz network.
  • The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold the option key on your keyboard and click the WiFi icon to get detailed information.
  • Update the printer firmware. Refer to this document for help.

Step 1: Restore wireless settings on the printer

  1. From the home screen of your printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/162/c02131772.gif
  2. Touch the Setup icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/359/c04943257.gif
  3. Touch Restore Network Defaults or Restore Network Settings, and then touch Yes to confirm your selection.

Step 2: Connect the printer to your wireless network

  1. From the home screen of your printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/162/c02131772.gif
  2. Touch the Setup icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/359/c04943257.gif
  3. Touch Wireless Settings, and then touch Wireless Setup Wizard. The printer searches for available networks.
  4.  Touch the name of your wireless network.
  5. Type the WEP or WPA key (network password), and then touch Done.

If you do not know your network password, go to Find Your Wireless WEP, WPA, WPA2 Password.

Once the printer connects to the wireless network, the blue Wireless light on the control panel turns on solid.

If the printer fails to connect to the wireless network, print a Wireless Network Test Report for further assistance.

Step 3: Perform a ping test

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon https://support.hp.com/wps/hp-skp-portlets/document/attachments/162/c02131772.gif  on the printer
  2. On the MAC Go to Spotlight > search for Network utility > select Ping tab > enter the IP address of the printer in the box
  3. Check the second box that says Send only > 10 pings
  4. Click on ping > Check the results at the end if any packets are lost

Note: There should be 0% packet loss

Step 4: Add the printer on your MAC using AirPrint drivers and try to print.

1. Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

2. Click the plus sign  click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.

3. Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.

Select AirPrint from the Use menu

4. Try to print.

Let me know how this goes.

HP OfficeJet 5740 won't stay connected to my computer

Excellent.  It is fixed.  Restoring the Network Defaults was the key to fixing my problem - that was all I needed to do and now it's working and not disconnecting every day.  Everything else I had either already tried or was already set up correctly.

Thanks.
