HP OfficeJet Pro 6960
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I accidentally updated firmaware of  HP OfficeJet Pro 6960 to the latest version. After that I tried replacing cartridges with non-HP cartridges and I get the following error on printer screen (I tried replacing all the catridges and I always get the same error:
Cartridge problem

Remove and reinstall the indicated cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed.

Is there a way to downgrade a firmware? When I go to details page of this printer, i only see the latest firmware, where can I find older versions of firmware?

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

You cannot downgrade a firmware, however, we can try some troubleshooting steps here:

Let's try to reset the Printer here:

Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  1. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  9. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Also, try connecting the Printer to a different wall outlet directly.

If you insert genuine HP cartridges do you still get the error message?

If the issue persists, please perform the remaining steps from this document: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-officejet-pro-6960-all-in-one-printer-series/8289579/documen...

Let me know if this helps.

Hi,

I tried proposed steps and also steps from provided link and the issue still persists. I still get the "Cartridge Problem" error.

If I insert genuine HP cartridges everything works fine.

Is there any other way to use third party cartridges?

HP Recommended

Unfortunately, no. HP does not recommend using third-party cartridges.

Nice way of making money:

1. update firmware to block third party cartridges under pretense of security

2. disable firmware downgrade to go back on working version

3. force users to buy only out product

what a joke

Hi

I’m facing the same issue and sincerely I think that it is not politically correct, could you help me to solve this matter? Otherwise I’m quite confident to bin the printer and to not buy HP anymore.

Thank you

HP Recommended

No, there is no solution. The only response I received was that they don't support third party cartridges.

This was the first and will be the only product I will ever own of HP brand.

HP Recommended

Agreed, there is no solution. Instead I called my ink provider and they replaced the cartridges for free. I also turned off firmware updates.

Hi, there, this behaviour is awful. Not only that Ink-cartridges are very expensive (in most cases two sets cartridges are equal to a new Printer), now HP prohibits the usage of non HP cartridges. This causes me to litter this HP garbage and buy an Printer from an other provider.

I'm definitely done with HP.
