Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have a Officejet Pro 8100 that when I put new HP ink cartridges in, now gives off the error message of "Missing or Failed Printhead". I have done all the steps listed on the HP Support site, but I couldn't update it's firmware. Can I do a factory reset or are there other options to try?

I have put the old ink cartridges back in and they don't work anymore either.

Thanks,

CK

I greatly value your relationship with HP. You are a valued HP customer and we appreciate you for doing business with HP.

I understand that you get an error message "Missing or Failed Printhead" while printing from your HP Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter series - N811.

It’ll be a great pleasure to assist you with this.

This issue could occur if the printhead is damaged or not installed properly.

Please follow the steps from the link for this issue: http://hp.care/2gUFTjt

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. Take care now and have a good day.

Thank you for your response Rainbow23. I did all the steps on that page that I could. Pressing the front buttons doesn't seem to do anything for me. I've checked the printhead and the cartridges, everything is clean and there is no damage. Doing the reset described here doesn't work, is there another way of doing a factory reset?

Firmware upgrade isn't taking, and it's out of warranty, so we're not going to pay for a new printhead or service.

Are you sure you emailed me the rigth model number? This printer only has a paper feed, cancel, wifi and one other button on it.  I don't see anything I'd call a Red Eye Removal button.

Greetings @Lewis62

Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are looking to perform a network defaults on your printer, is that right?

Kudos to you for trying to troubleshoot the issue on your own.

Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.

May I know the operating system installed on your computer?

Have you tried configuring the printer using a USB cable?

Is the wireless light On on the printer?

Are you using a dual band router?

Note: HP Printers do not work or connect to 5Ghz networks. If you are using a dual band router, please give different names to 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz networks and connect the printer to the 2.4Ghz network.

As the network reset is not working on your printer, the issue could be a wireless card issue with the printer itself. (Hardware issue.)

However, recommend you first configure the printer using a USB connection.

Download and install the latest full feature software from www.hp.com/drivers

Once the printer is working fine over USB connection.

Refer to this HP Article to use the print utility to convert the USB connection to wireless.

Let me know if this helped. Request you to provide more information for further assistance.

Thanks for the reply and providing the more information. Did you try converting the USB connection to wireless using the print utility as suggested in the article shared with you earlier?

Recommend you follow the procedure mentioned below to uninstall the printer software and settings completely.

Configure the printer using a USB connection.

Once the printer is working fine with USB connection, refer to this HP Article to convert the USB connection to wireless using the printer utility.

  • Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
  • Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
  • Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
  • Click on print server properties.
  • You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there, if any.
  • Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
  • Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
  • It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files, ignore them).
  • If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
  • Restart the PC again.
  • Download the latest full feature driver from www.hp.com/drivers and install it on the computer.
  • Power On/Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

Once the printer is working fine with USB connection, refer to this HP Article to convert the USB connection to wireless using the printer utility.

Let me know if this helped.
