I have a Hewlett-Packard PSC 1510xi All-in-One Printer (Product Number Q5881A).
There is an HP 92 Black ink cartridge installed and recognized by the printer. The Black indicator is on and not flashing.
I do not have an HP 93 Tri-color ink cartridge available so the Color indicator is flashing. Also, as expected, the Check Print Cartridge is flashing.
This printer is installed and configured both on my Windows 10 computer and another computer running Kubuntu Linux. Even if I set the printer software for black-only printing, the printer will not print. I can send a test page to the printer, but there is no output.
Before I invest in a Tri-color ink cartridge, is there a way to check the operation of the printer using the black cartridge only?

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I reviewed your post and I understand that you want to know whether the printer supports single-cartridge mode.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
Based on the information that I have, this printer doesn’t support single-cartridge mode and you need to install both the cartridges to print.
This is a pretty old printer and I suggest you purchase a new printer instead of investing in the cartridge.
I hope that answers your question and you have a great day!

I agree that investing in a tri-color cartridge is not indicated for this old printer. (On the other hand I might find on at one of my local thrift stores for $1 as I have in the past.)
I'll keep the PSC 1510xi for the scanner. I have an old HP Deskjet 3940 too but it has become unreliable. I rarely need a printer next to my computer these days. Recently I've been printing from PDF files at my local Staples for just 13 cents per page.
Thank you for the advice.
