HP Photosmart 7520 printer
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

What do I do when the printer screen says "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on.  If the problem persists, contact HP."  I tried turning it off and on many times.  I only use HP ink 564XL from Staples.

At the same time:

The computer screen gets a message that says "Missing or failed printhead    Cyan/Magenta/Yellow/Black/Photo Black

The printhead appears to be missing, not detected, incorrectly installed or incompatible."

I tried removing and re installing each with no luck.

Any thoughts on this problem?

@Matt2796, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I'm afraid this is a possible hardware issue with the printer. Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, perform step 2 mentioned in this document.

Let me know how this goes.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately your reset and upgrade did not work.  I even tried removing the cartridges and then the printhead.  i cleaned it, but no good.  Any other idea?

That's unfortunate. If the issue persists, please contact our HP Support team for Service Options as it could be a possible hardware issue:

1) Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/

2) Select your product type below.

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Select the appropriate option based on your preference.

6) Fill the web-form and proceed further.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

You may purchase the printhead if it is available. To check its availability, you will have to contact HP support as suggested in my previous post.

Note: Printhead may cost you more and buying a new printer would be better. Depends on your requirement.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.
