I was going to use my printer this morning and it told me that the black ink cartridge needed to be re-installed; did that several times and it is still not printing. It has just below half the ink. This happened the last time I had a color cartridge.

I understand you have issues with the black ink cartridge, I would recommend you follow the steps from the document Ink Cartridge Errors for help.
Additionally, Update the printer firmware
Download available firmware updates from the HP website
With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware.
If the issue persists, please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.
