Example: HP6830 Office Jet
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP6830 Officejet Pro stopped printing black ink.  The cartridge shows half full, but I tried replacing it with another instant ink cartridge, same issue.  I've gone through the whole process of deleting the printer from my laptop, downloading and reinstalling the drivers, reconnected to the printer, and still no black ink.  Went through all the print head cleaning and page smearing clean up process to no avail.  Prior to the black ink stopping printing, I was printing a 12 page document, 2-sided, and about half way through the print the letters started disappearing, to the point where the rest of the document was blank.  Now the only time I think I see black ink is when I try to print the printer report document.  About half way down the page I get a rectangle of each of the three colors, and they seem to be surrounded to two black brackets.  I also have what appears to be a blank rectangle, with black brackets around it.  Why these would print and nothing else, is a mystery.
