HP8720

Hi All, I have an HP8720 printer with a 2nd tray installed.  When tray 1 is empty the printer does not pick up from tray 2 although it should automatically go to tray 2.  This only happens when the printer is connected on the network, it works fine when it is connected via USB.  I've checked the tray lock and other recommended settings and they are fine.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Thanks, Dave

Welcome to the HP Community

Could you please help me with the operating system of the computer?

Is the copy working fine with the 2nd tray?

This could be a driver issue as the printer works fine while connected with USB.

Keep me posted.

Have a great day!

Cheers:)

Update the printer firmware using this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-officejet-pro-8720-all-in-one-printer-series/7902032/documen...

Restart the printer.

If the issue persists, I recommend you delete the driver at the root level and Install the drivers, follow the steps below:

Remove the USB if connected

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

Then, Click on this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-8720-all-in-one-printer-series/790... to install the HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Drivers.

Keep me posted, how it goes!

Hi Raj

Thanks for the reply.  I have tried the copy and this did not work with the 2nd tray.  The printer firmware is up to date, version 1910A .  I haven't tried the printer drivers yet but with the 2nd tray not working on the copy, would this imply a printer problem rather than a pc problem?  Is it possible to test this to check if it is a problem with my setup or a firmware problem?

Kind regards

Reseat the paper tray once again and do a Hard Reset on the printer

(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.

(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.

Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Keep me posted.

Have a great day!

Cheers:)
