Officejet Pro 6968
macOS 10.14 Mojave

My Officejet Pro 6968 has to be turned on and off every time I try to print, or my Mac laptop will not recognize it. I can't keep doing this.  I have so much work to do, and the burden is unbelievable. Everything is updated. The wifi is working. It's happening to my colleagues who are using both Windows and Mac.

This morning, I spent a full hour turning it on and off and on and off, and it just would not show up in my printer list. I read the help articles. I deleted the printer from the list as the help articles said to do, and then it wouldn't show up as an option to reinstall. I restarted my router. Nothing. Then, after an hour of doing this over and over, it suddenly pops up as an option, but only as a fax. I add it. It won't print or scan, because it only includes fax options. Still not showing up as a printer.

I would like to delete all of the software off of the printer and reinstall it. There is guidance on how to do this. Please help!

@Robbie1299, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Apologies for the inconvenience caused.

To assist you better, how is the printer connected to the MAC? This seems like a connectivity issue between the printer and the MAC, reinstalling the drivers would not help.

If the printer is connected wirelessly, let us try these steps:

  • Make sure the printer and the MAC are connected to the same wireless network.
  • This printer supports only 2.4GHz network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.
  • The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold the option key on your keyboard and click the WiFi icon to get detailed information.

Update the printer firmware

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Check the connectivity between the printer and the MAC

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon on the printer
  2. On the MAC Go to Spotlight > search for Network utility > select Ping tab > enter the IP address of the printer in the box
  3. Check the second box that says Send only > 10 pings
  4. Click on ping > Check the results at the end if any packets are lost
  5. Note: There should be 0% packet loss, share the results in your next post.

Keep me posted.
