I am trying to set up my printer for the first time, but the black set-up ink cartridge doesn't work

I am trying to set up my printer for the first time. When I put the set-up ink cartridges in, there is an error screen and I'm told to reinsert the black cartridge. I've done this many times and it still doesn't work. I tried to put a new ink cartridge in, but it says I have to start with the set-up cartridge. Suggestions?

The fact that it see's the non-setup cartridge tells me that the setup cartridge is defective.

The cartridge is under warranty.
