Printer keeps saying incorrect paper size. I’ve unplugged from the back to reset, adjusted paper settings on the computer, checked for firmware updates, removed and re-added the printer, deleted all HP software and reinstalled. None of it worked. It will however make copies, just no printing. Help?!

Hi @Jsoiza,

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you

Due to the current global COVID-19 situation, we're seeing an influx of customers coming in for support. We appreciate your patience.

What are the paper type, size, and weight of the paper your using?

Meanwhile, try the steps below -

Step 1: Adjust the paper size setting

Check the paper size setting to make sure it matches the paper you want to print.

NOTE:

Some printers have an option to ignore the error and continue printing. If you choose to ignore the error, the margins on your printout might not be proportional to the edges of the paper.

  1. In the application you want to print from, click File, and then click Print.

  2. If a Show Details button displays at the bottom of the dialog, click it to reveal all available menu options. The button changes to Hide Details when clicked.

  3. Select your printer from the Printer drop-down list.

  4. Click Paper Size.

    Selecting the correct paper size

  5. Select the paper size that matches the size and type of paper loaded in the printer tray, and then click OK. If there are no matching paper sizes, select the size from the list that is closest to the size of the paper loaded in the tray.

    NOTE:

Depending on the software application, Paper Size might not display in the Print options. Click File, and then select Page Setup from the menu.

Selecting the correct paper size in the Page Setup menu

  6. Try to print. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Reset the printer

Reset the printer to clear any hardware issues or error states.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

    NOTE:

HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Try to print. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Remove and add the printer

Remove your printer from the printer list, and then add it again.

  1. Click the Apple menu, and then select System Preferences.

  2. Depending on your operating system version, click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners.

  3. Click the name of your printer, click the Minus sign, and then delete the printer.

Select printer and click the minus sign

  4. Click the Plus sign, and then click Add Printer or Scanner, if necessary.

  5. Select your printer from the list.

  6. Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select Secure AirPrint, AirPrint, or the name of your printer if available.

Select AirPrint from the Use menu

  7. Click Add to add the printer to the list.

  8. Try to print. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 4: Check the paper source setting

Remove and reload the paper in the input trays, and then check the paper source setting.

  1. Remove all the paper from all the printer input trays.

  2. Reload the paper, and then adjust the paper width guides so they gently rest against the edge of the paper stack.

  3. In the program you want to print from, click File, and then click Print.

    NOTE:

If your printer only has one paper tray, skip to the step to Update the firmware. You do not need to select a paper source in the printer settings.

  4. Select your printer from the Printer drop-down list.

  5. Select the Paper Type/Quality or Media & Quality menu.

  6. Click Feed from or Source to select the correct paper tray.

Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
