HP Envy 7640
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently changed my black printer cartridge when it ran out. I am using HP cartridges. Once I changed it started printing jagged horizontal lines and in fact letter are jagged at certain intervals but it is easier to see when I print a series of horizontal lines on a page. It only happens with the black ink and not the colour cartridge. I printed to same series of lines in blue and it prints fine. I thought it might be the cartridge but a sales person told me it is the printer head or something. Can I run some kind of routine to fix this? Or do I have to junk the printer? I do like this printer and I bought it in April 2017 so it is not that old and worked great until last week. Can anyone help? I have attached a picture of what the jagged printing looks like.

Hi! @ianc1, Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand when you print from your printer the printer is printing horizontal jagged lines.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Have you tried printing from a different application? Does the issue persist?

Does the issue persist when you make a copy from your printer?

Have you tried printing a different application?

Excellent description and a great diagnosis done. It is greatly appreciated.

Replace low, empty or faulty ink cartridges on your printer.

Try printing using a different brand of paper and check if the issue persists.

Try changing the print setting from the application you are using to print.

If the copy works fine uninstall the printer software from root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software.

In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

Select your HP printer.

Select Uninstall.

In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

Click on Drivers tab.

Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

Update the full feature printer software using this link. Click Here

Also, try the steps recommended below.

Align the printer

Follow these steps to align the printer from the control panel.

  1. Load U.S. letter or A4 size, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, swipe the display to the left, and then touch Setup.

    The Setup menu displays.

  3. Swipe the display down, and then touch Printer Maintenance.

  4. Touch Align Printer.

  5. After the printer prints the alignment page, touch OK, and then recycle or discard the alignment page.

  6. Try to print.

Check the print settings for your print job in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista.

1.In the software application you are trying to print from, click File, and then click Print.

The Print window opens.

2.Open the Properties dialog box.

Depending on the software application, the button might be Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer, or Preferences.

3.Depending on your print job, you might consider modifying the following settings:

• Paper Type: If you are printing on photo paper, select the type of photo paper you are attempting to print on.

• Print Quality: If you are dissatisfied with the quality of your printouts, increase the print quality. To print more quickly, decrease the print quality. These options typically include Best, Normal, and Draft modes.

• Paper Size: If you are printing on a different size of paper than you normally print on, select the correct paper size.

• Black and White: If you want to print in black and white only, select the grayscale option.

4.After selecting the print settings, click OK to apply the settings, and then click Print.
