Recently, in the basic printer queue window, and in the supply levels window, I see a message that says "Marker Supply Low."

I have tried the procedures in some other posts, but nothing seems to clear the message.

What does this mean, and how do I clear it?

@BDG2, Welcome to HP Support Community!

This could be a driver related issue. Let us try the steps below-

Reset the printer-

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  9. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed

Remove and add the printer

Click the Apple menu, and then select System Preferences.

Depending on your operating system version, click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners.

Click the name of your printer, click the Minus sign, and then delete the printer.

Select printer and click the minus sign

Click the Plus sign, and then click Add Printer or Scanner.

Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select AirPrint

Select AirPrint from the Use menu

Click Add to add the printer to the list.

Try to print.

@BDG2

Thanks for replying!

Check the ink levels on the printer. If the ink levels are good, remove and reinstall the cartridges and try printing.

Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. For more information, go to Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware.

If the issue persists, please reach out to the HP Support in your region for further assistance.

Hope this helps!

Hi @djm45

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

  • Are you using a HP Officejet 8740 AIO printer?
  • Which version of macOS is installed on the MAC?

Let us try these steps:

Use the printer software to check ink or toner levels from your Mac computer.

  1. Click the Apple icon , click System Preferences, and then click Printers and Scanners, Print & Fax, or Print & Scan.

  2. Select your printer from the list, click Options & Supplies, and then click the Supplies tab.

    Clicking Options & Supplies

  3. Check the ink levels and if the message appears on this window as shown below.

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Click here to know how.

If the issue persists, perform step 3 mentioned in this document.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I did try reinstalling the printer and it did work.  However, it still shows Marker Supply Low.  Not going to worry about it right now.
