My Officejet pro 8600 has developed this problem after been a reliable printer for the past four years. Now it needs to be unplugged and plugged in daily in order to print.

Hi @Bookdiva

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the printing issue.

To better assist you -

1) How's the printer connected - wired or wireless?

2) Are you getting any error while printing?

While you respond to that, let's try updating the Mac book. Refer to this document for steps - How to update the software on your Mac.

Also, try updating the printer's firmware. Refer to these steps - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

To answer the posed questions--1) How's the printer connected - wired or wireless? wired

2) Are you getting any error while printing? No error message

My MacBook Air is updated as is the  printer's firmware

However, it stops printing after a day of printing and the power button pulses on/off but it will not come to life until I unplug and replug it. Yikes, it's frustrating.

Try assigning a Manual IP Address and check if that helps

1) Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
2) Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
3) Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
4) Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
5) Click Manual IP
6) If you see a Suggest a Manual IP Address button, click Manual IP address, and the Manual IP addresses are automatically filled out for you.
7) If your page does not have a button to suggest a manual IP address, type the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway using the numbers shown in the report you printed.

Keep me posted how it goes
