New ink HP ink cartridge and I get an error message "At least one of the cartridges has a problem"

I bought a new HP printer cartridge and I get the error that at least one of the cartridges has a problem. It turns out to be the color cartridge. The store will not accept the return since it is now an opened package. What can I do to get it replaced?
