Not possible to revert to Instant Ink free plan?

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am currently subscriped to the Occasional Printing plan on HP Instant Ink. As I no longer need to print up to 50 pages a month I would like to revert to the free plan which gives up to 15 pages. When I attempt to cancel my plan it says my Instant Ink cartridges will stop working if I cancel. Is this right? Can I not simply revert to the free plan with my cartridges?

It is true that if you cancel your Instant Ink subscription the cartridges will no longer work and need to be returned to HP per the user agreement.

I do not know if it is possible to downgrade from the fifty page plan to the fifteen page plan, I would suggest you contact the HP Instant Ink Support team.  Log into the HP Instant Ink site, the phone number (or chat option for some countries) will be listed in the lower right of the opening screen.
