OfficeJet Pro 8730
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

My networked 8730 keeps losing the connection - despite being wired ethernet.

I've turned off all the power save features I can find but still no joy

Print & Scan Doctor which is supposed to fix things like this is a completely useles POS.

The only thing that works is power cycling either printer or computer.

@PpPete,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!

  • What is the make/model of the Modem/router from which the Ethernet is connected to the printer?
  • Do you face any connectivity issues with the other devices?
  • Is the printer going to sleep mode or not responding?
  • Do you get any messages like printer offline on the Windows PC?

Let's try to update the 'Printer Firmware'

  • From the printer control panel. touch the Set Up icon.
  • Go To > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer > Check for Printer Updates
  • Check if the update fixes the issue.

Also please print the network 'Network Configuration Page' and share the results here.

  • From the printer control panel. touch the Set Up icon.
  • Go to Network Setup > Print Reports > Network Configuration Page

Let me know if this helps.

I have the same issue with Virgin Media Hub 3.0 cable modem as I did with a Linksys router on a copper connection.

No connectivity issues with any other device

Printer is on and responds to commands like copy, scan to USB

Windows reports printer offline

Printer updates all  done & confirmed by message on control panel

Network Configuration Page is at https://www.dropbox.com/s/8c7txygvz17xrgz/networkConfig.pdf?dl=0

@PpPete,

  • Do you have any security software or firewall installed on the PC?

Please try these steps:

  • On the printer control panel go to 'Set Up' > 'Reports' > 'Network Configuration Page'
  • Obtain the IP address of the printer
  • Open any web browser like Google Chrome, Firefox or any other browser.
  • Type the printer IP address into the Internet browser address line, and then press Enter to open the printer EWS.

  • If a website security certificate displays, click Continue to access the EWS page.
  • Go to the 'Tools' menu and print a self-test page.
  • Check if it prints.

Let me know what happens.

Printer test page is printed OK from EWS.   However if I try to print a word document immediately after, Windows reports that the printer is offline (see screenshot at https://www.dropbox.com/s/k3vuaqiuugbvuyy/screenshot.jpg?dl=0

I have Kaspersky Internet Security installed on PC - but even if I disable it printing still fails - until such time as I switch printer off and on again.

@PpPete,

I think the firewall/Kaspersky may be blocking the printer.

Let's try these steps:

  • Open Kaspersky Internet Security

  • Click on Settings
  • Click on Additional on the left
  • Click on Network on the right

  •  Click on Select... to the right of "Monitor selected ports only"

  • Click on the Add button.
  • Type the description Network Printer Port.
  • Change the Port to 9100.
  • Click the Add button below.

  •  On the previous window titled 'Network ports', scroll to the bottom of the list to find the Networked Printer Port.
  • Right-click on 'Network Printer Port' and choose Disable.

  • Close the 'Network ports' window.
  • Click the Back arrow in the upper left twice to return to the main window

 Let me know if this works.

Sorry - I was away from home.

But no - sorry that did not work.

The only thing that works is to switch the printer off and then on again ... but come back a few hours later and it's dropped the connection AGAIN.

@PpPete,

Let's try these steps:

Step 1: Add the printer using TCP/IP address

  • Obtain the IP address of your printer.
    • Go to Set Up menu > Network Set Up > Ethernet Settings > View Ethernet details
  • On your PC, Go to 'Control Panel'> 'Hardware and Sound' > 'Devices and Printers'
  • Right click on the printer and select 'Remove Device' to remove previously configured printers.
  • Click on add a printer.

  • Select "the printer I want isn't listed.

  • Select "add a printer using TCP/IP address or hostname"

  • Enter the IP address of the printer

  • Select your printer model from the menu

  • Click 'Next'
  • Follow the On-Screen instructions and complete the installation.
  • Try to print.

Also, try disabling the IPv6 feature from the printer

  • Go to Set Up menu > Network Set Up > Ethernet Settings > Advanced settings > IPv6 > Off

Let me know if this helps.

Incredible !   The test page printed ok - but nothing else works.  Now I cannot print anything even if I switch the printer off and on again.
