I replaced my black ink cartridge (with a genuine HP 902XL) and now it won't print black ink at all.

I've tried two different cartridges (which are showing as full when I check the levels on the printer and on my computer).

I've run the cleaning program several times.

Printhead Health is "Good"

I've unplugged my printer.

Color works fine.

@rachelinouray I recommend you delete the driver at the root level and retry, follow the steps below:

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

Then, Click here to access the HP website, find the drivers compatible with your windows and install it.

If the issue persists, please go ahead and install the windows built-in drivers:

If a full feature driver from HP is not available for your printer, you must install the built-in print driver. A full feature driver for one or more Windows versions is not available for your printer, either from the CD that shipped with your printer or from the HP website.

   NOTE:

Where is the download button? The HP print driver is built into the Windows operating system or is installed through the Windows Update feature on your computer. You do not need to download anything from a website in order to print, scan, or fax.

See the Frequently asked questions in this document for additional information, including how to scan using this driver.

Hi,

Well I reinstalled the printer and there is no change.

Any other suggestions?

Everyone I've asked about this says they just bought a new computer after efforts to fix this type of hardware issue failed.

Did you make a copy and check if that prints fine?

If not, Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page

  1. Load plain white paper in the input tray.

  2. From the printer control panel, open the Setup  menu.

  3. Open the Reports or Tools menu.

  4. Touch Print Quality Report.

A Print Quality Diagnostic Page prints.

If that does not print fine, follow the below steps:-

Make sure the ink cartridges are properly vented and seated correctly

  1. Turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on.

  2. Open the ink cartridge access door.

The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

    Open the cartridge access door

  3. Wait until the carriage stops moving before you continue.

  4. Press the tab inward on the front of the old ink cartridge to release it, and then pull up on the ink cartridge to remove it from the slot.

  5. Examine the vent area above the HP logo on the top of the ink cartridge.

  6. If the ink cartridge still has the orange pull-tab attached, pull to remove it.

  7. If the vent is clogged, use a straight pin to gently remove excess adhesive from the vent.

    3. Unclogged vent

  8. Turn the ink cartridge so that the ink cartridge contacts face downward, and then match the label color with the color dot on the carriage.

  9. Slide the ink cartridge into its slot, and then gently press the ink cartridge down until it snaps into place.

  10. Repeat these steps to inspect the vents on each of the ink cartridges.

  11. Make sure each ink cartridge is firmly installed in its slot. Run your finger along the top of the ink cartridges to feel for any that are protruding, and if any are, press down firmly until each ink cartridge snaps into place.

  12. Close the ink cartridge access door.

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for your suggestions. I cannot make copies in blank ink, which has me fairly certain this has nothing to do with drivers.

I've tried two different new black ink cartridges, and I did check to make sure the vents were not covered with the packaging. The blank ink is situated properly (I hear it snap into place and ink levels show up as full when I look them up on the computer and printer).

I've cleaned printer heads via the HP tool on my computer. Is there some way to clean them manually?

If this cannot be fixed, is there some credit I can get with HP.... I have $120 worth of ink, plus now a new printer (and that printer's new ink) to purchase.
