HP Office Jet 4650 All-in-one
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Printer will not print.   After running all updates & diagnostics, manually cleaned ink cartridge, black ink cartridge half full on 4650  printer purchased 1-17 and with very minimal usage, received message "Printer should be replaced".

Are there any additional diagnostic options?     If indeed I have to purchase a new printer, it will not be an HP product!

Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi @OKBookworm

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

Try making a standalone copy in black and color to check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Print a Print Quality Diagnostic report

  1. On the printer control panel, swipe the display to the left, and then touch Setup.

  2. Touch Tools.

  3. Swipe up on the display, and then touch Print Quality Report.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I had already tried all of your suggestions prior to posting.    What is the shelf life of HP black ink?   Although black cartridge is half full,  when trying to copy directly from printer,  it sounds like it is printing but ejects blank paper.

Appreciate you trying the steps. I'd suggest you Contact HP in your region regarding this.

Problem solved!     After repeatedly running all diagnostics, which indicated all systems operational & black ink cartridge half full, and following all solutions suggested by the HP Community,  but still not being able to print directly from printer,  I changed the black ink cartridge & am now able to print.

My question to the community about shelf life of ink cartridges was not answered.

I learned any expensive lesson:    for infrequent usage & minimal printing, do not invest in the high-yield cartridge.   My $39.99 high-yield cartridge apparently dried up at the half-full level.
