Officejet 7740
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

For months I had my Officejet 7740 connected to my Windows PC with a USB cable using the HP Smart app.  Then all of a sudden I can no longer print to this printer.  The HP Smart app says the printer is ready.  In the devices app it says "driver is unavailable".  I have deleted and reinstalled this printer and the app multiple times and every time I attempt to print it won't.  Even when the printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable the computer can't locate the printer.  I have swapped out the USB cable twice and I know the cable works because it worked with another device.

Welcome to the HP support community.

Did you uninstall the printer driver from the root level?

If not, follow the below steps:-

Perform root level uninstallation to remove all the printer related software's.

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Remove all instances of the same.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.
  • Restart the PC again.

Download and install printer full feature driver

Click here to download the driver.

I hope that helps.

Unfortunately, this didn't work.  The printer appears in the printers & scanners list, but it shows "driver is unavailable".  The HP Smart app shows the printer is ready, but when I attempt to print a document through the app, it tells me it needs to install the printer, then says "error during installation, install manually".

This might require remote access to your computer to fix the issue.

I request you to talk to HP support.

They might have multiple options to help you with this.

  1. Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true
  2. Select the country.
  3. Enter the serial of your device.
  4. Select the country from the drop-down.
  5. Click on "Show Options".
  6. Fill the web-form. A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

I hope that helps.

I do not see the "show options" link, when I put in the serial number of my product it tells me I'm out of warranty (which I know).  It appears my only option from that point is to run the diagnostic, which I've done multiple times or visit the online community.  Been there done that, still can't print. Very frustrated.

I understand your concerns.

Please run the SFC scan on your computer.

Please run the SFC scan. you can refer to this Link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/4026529/windows-10-using-system-file-checker

I would suggest you try the Windows built-in drivers. Follow the steps below:

•    Go to Control Panel - Devices and printers - Click on "Add printer" and follow the on-screen instructions.

•    When the page prompts for the drivers, select "Windows update". The driver list will be updated.

•    Click HP, Hewlett Packard, or Hewlett-Packard in the Manufacturer pane, and then click the name of your printer in the Printers pane.
