Why do 25% of my label and envelope print jobs misprint like the attached photos on the first try but almost always print properly on the second try?  This is a huge pain in the butt and waste of paper and expensive printed labels.

@steveweinberg, Welcome to HP Support Community!

I understand you have issues with printing envelopes and labels. This could be an issue with the installed drivers or the settings. Follow the steps below-

Refer to the document HP Printers - Printing Envelopes (Mac) to learn about the settings-

Ensure that the printer is up to date with its firmware and Mac is up to date with its software. If you are unsure you may use the links below to update the printer firmware and Mac software:

Update printer firmware

Update software on Mac

Remove and add the printer

Click the Apple menu, and then select System Preferences.

Depending on your operating system version, click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners.

Click the name of your printer, click the Minus sign, and then delete the printer.

Select printer and click the minus sign

Click the Plus sign, and then click Add Printer or Scanner.

Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select AirPrint

Select AirPrint from the Use menu

Click Add to add the printer to the list.

Try to print.

Keep me posted for further assistance.

I know how to print envelopes and labels.  I've owned HP Printers now for 20 years.  You saw the photo of how ruined many of them come out, though.  The weird thing is that on the second try doing the exact same thing, they come out printed nicely.  Regular letter size paper never comes out so misprinted.   I don't want to continue wasting envelopes and printed labels on bad first tries.  How can I prevent this misprint error altogether?

@steveweinberg

Try removing and readding the printer as mentioned in my previous post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Stand by.  I don't do labels and envelopes every day, but so far so good.  Hopefully it will continue to work.

That's tonight's envelope print.  First one today.  I guess the reload the printer solution did not work.  And the second try to print this envelope, as usual, printed fine.  What's my next option to try and eliminate these all-too-frequest misprints of envelopes and labels??

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.  I am confident we will solve this strange problem of first pass misprinting.

The fact that it prints Envelopes and labels fine the second time is what is so mystifying
