I’m a teacher who uses my Envy 5660 to print classroom materials. When I print pdf’s, the background of the images comes out black. I print off of my iPad running software 12.3.1 and have tried printing from many different apps with no avail. This is especially frustrating because my mom, who has the exact same printer, prints my files correctly.

@Helen51, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Have you tried printing a Word document or Webpages and check if the issue persists?

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your computer.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, update the software on your iPad

If the background color is selected as black, that could be the reason the printer is filling the image with black. Let's try changing the background color:

Note: Try this on a MAC

1.) Right click on the picture/document that you want to print, select Open With and select Preview.

2.) Click Preview and select Preferences.

3.) Click Windows background: and Choose the desired color.

4.) Click File and select Print.

Let me know how this goes.

My printer firmware is up to date. So is my iPad. Printing from a website doesn’t solve the problem.

As for changing the background color, I’m on an iPad. There is no way to right click.

I’m still getting a black border and need help.

I tried this. It does not fix the issue.

I just solved this problem for me by going to the top bar on this page and clicked "support" and then "software & drivers".  I then looked up information for my printer and added the software for my new mac.  I had forgotten to update that when I purchased my new computer.

I have this exact same issue.  I have made sure my preferences are set to white.  I have deleted my printer and reinstalled it with the drivers from your website.  This happens with images embedded in pdf files, Google doc files, and Microsoft files.  Please provide help.

Hi @Kdoody

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

Which version of macOS are you using?

Have you tried printing different types of documents like Word or Webpages with graphics and check if the issue persists?

This seems like an application-specific issue with Adobe Reader.

Update/reinstall the Adobe application on your MAC and try printing

Also, check for software updates on your MAC. Click here to know how.

If the issue persists, try printing the file as an Image PDF, refer to this document to know how.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

This is why HP Sucks! They have so many issues and the tech help can never solve them! I found that if I save the document as a jpeg, then it prints without a black background.
